Fall Fun in Flagstaff

Toryn and I headed up to Flagstaff to spend the day with Moriah and the boys. Their cousin, Kelly, joined us for a picnic and some soccer at Thorpe Park. Canyon ran from one end of our field to the other pretty much non stop!

Trek wasn't super clear about the difference between football and soccer at first. But he caught on pretty quickly.

Moriah is catching some air!! This baby boy will be born on the move, I think!

Gram may not be jumping, but she's ready to run!

We divided into teams of three and three, but truth is, we all knew it could have been Kelly against the rest of us and she'd have won hands (or feet) down!

Later that afternoon, we cut a couple of jack-o-lanterns. Canyon drew a detailed face and we did the best we could to carve it out.

Trek wanted "classic" triangle eyes and nose with a big jagged grin on his pumpkin. That I could do.

Matthew is Sixteen!!!! Where Has the Time Gone? (A Belated Entry)

Happy Birthday Matthew! On September 26th, 1997 this precious baby boy was born into our lives. Since it was the second time around at UNM, I wasn't so surprised to have my grandson handed to me wrapped in a black plastic garbage bag (to help him retain his heat), but I laugh to this day that they made me put a hair cover over my shiny bald head. I have loved you from the moment you were born!

Sixteen years later my beautiful daughter and her sweet son still warm my heart. Although looking back on these pics, I can see that my Matthew is in some distress from his recent knee injury. Such a brave boy, but Gram can tell he is hurting a bit.

Big Brother and Dad..... I will never forget the first time Jesse met his baby brother.

Family and friends, old and young came to celebrate Matthew's sixteenth birthday.

Dad cooked hot dogs and burgers of all kinds (something for everyone).

Pick of the Pond II- September 10- October 25th, 2013

It's amazing to look at all these fish (I had five at the start of summer) and realize that hundreds, maybe thousands, of eggs were spawned. Still, 26 little ones survived...and I figured I should only keep five of them, giving me  a total of ten. My pond is so small. I gave 21 of the youngsters away.

A day after I narrowed down my numbers, I saw this black-necked garter snake taking a look into the pond. Uh-oh. Maybe I thinned out the population too soon!

'Turns out there were two of them.

Sweethearts?

Reflection of a hunter....

"Yikes!" says Ash. Did you see those snakes?

But as the weather gets cooler and the snakes are probably hibernating, I am glad to see ten fish each day.

Pick of The Pond I- July 10- September 10, 2013

I always enjoy sitting by my pond for a relaxing moment or two whenever I get a chance. But the fascination intensified July 10th when Toryn gave me an olive colored baby goldfish that she couldn't keep anymore. I went out with a flashlight later that evening to check on "Happy" and was stunned to see a couple of small fry hiding in the Parrot's Feather! My goldfish had successfully spawned!

Over the next few days (sitting and staring into the mid-summer murky water) I realized there were LOTS of babies who survived being eaten by their moms and dads! So exciting! (Although I was already wondering what I was going to do with all these fish My pond is only big enough for 10 max).

A few more weeks went by and I delighted in every color change (and some who didn't). Happy turned a bright orange (she's the one sandwiched between two dark babies on the right). There is a small white and yellow fish, a white and orange baby, and a lovely red-orange with a black tail! I am trying not to name them. My sister, Debbie, taught me that. But I'm not having much luck.

Look closely. Dreamer (yes, I named her) is looking up through the bubble at the giant with a camera (me). Yikes!

Fish were not the only critters at the pond this summer. A few toads dropped by to call for sweethearts on balmy nights.

Foxy decided that fish-flavored water was better than his own.

And sweet Bo also lapped up a few gulps as the big fish circled around his tongue. What are they thinking!?!

And yes, a snake. A few days after I realized I was missing a couple of babies (the orange fish with the black flowing tail, for one), I discovered this fella in the water! Well, maybe I wouldn't have to worry about giving so many away after all! I decided to take a wait and see approach.

So here I was 2 months after I spotted those first little fry. I'd already given away 5 fish...had quite a few nabbed by the big guys and the snake...but still had a pond full of pleasure to greet me each day!
